Eat Vegan in North Wales

Eating out as a vegan is never the easiest of tasks. Many vegans will be familiar with the process of scouring a menu to find a suitable option and even calling a restaurant in advance to request a change to an existing dish. Even more vegans will be familiar with the plate of chips that is often the only suitable choice. Thankfully, in North Wales, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from with thoughtfully considered vegan dishes that won’t leave you feeling like an afterthought.

Ouzo and Olive - Caernarfon

You’d be forgiven for thinking you had accidentally taken a wrong turn and ended up in Greece when you step inside Ouzo and Olive. Clearly labelled vegan options throughout the menu make eating as a vegan a breeze and there is enough choice to ensure you don’t feel like you’re missing out. Their baklava is usually made with syrup instead of honey, meaning you get a lovely sweet treat to finish, too.

Caban - Brynrefail

Caban should be a staple in any household in Gwynedd. They have specials that change every day, their menu changes seasonally and they have the best cakes on offer, too. Well-behaved dogs are allowed, it’s very family-friendly and it’s close to Llyn Padarn so you can go for a walk, too.

Fron Goch - Caernarfon

If you’re looking for the recipe for a perfect day it looks like a stroll along the cycle path from Caernarfon to Fron Goch, a browse of the flowers and a gorgeous roast in the outdoor seating. If you’re not there on a Sunday their sausage butty is a lovely treat.

Hangin’ Pizzeria - Betws-y-coed

Every trip to Betws should end with a pizza from Hangin’ Pizzeria. They have a gorgeous outdoor patio for warmer weather and four different vegan pizzas on offer. A percentage of each pizza sale goes to the Ape Action Africa and Orangutan Appeal UK too, which makes eating here a bit of a no-brainer.

The Eating Gorilla - Penrhyndeudraeth

The Eating Gorilla has been a champion of vegan food for many years and continues to be even though its ownership may have changed hands. The food is all vegan and it’s perfect for a takeaway if you’re headed to any of the local beaches.

Kyffin Cafe Deli - Bangor

Not only is the food incredible in Kyffin but it feels like stepping back in time. There’s a beautiful long counter, heavy wooden bookcases, rattan armchairs and gorgeous handmade chocolates in their glass cabinet. There are always vegan options on offer which you can get served alongside the many salads, as well as cakes for your something sweet.

Jasmine - Bangor

Serving both Cantonese and Japanese dishes, Jasmine is a longstanding favourite on Bangor High Street. They serve both tofu dishes and mock meat dishes, and there’s more than just your standard takeaway fare here. They’re incredibly knowledgeable on veganism so you can feel confident asking the staff about any dishes you’re not sure of.

Blue Sky Cafe & Taproom - Bangor

Squeeze your way down an alley painted in a eye-catching mural just off Bangor High Street and you’ll find your way to Blue Sky, a cafe/venue with a bar on the ground floor. There are plenty of vegan options to line your belly before enjoying the range of beers on tap downstairs.

Tafarn Y Garth - Bangor

Tofish, sausage or pie is available at Tafarn Y Garth. You can wait inside for your order or take a buzzer and sit out on the grass to enjoy the exceptional views. Pair your meal with a pint and perhaps a stroll along the pier and you’ve got the makings of a very nice time indeed.

Popty Bakery - Conwy

Popty Bakery is a must visit if you’re in Conwy, and the people in the line snaking out of the door clearly agree. All bakery items are clearly labelled with their allergens but you can ask specifically for their vegan options if you’re not sure.

Nonno’s - Conwy

A cute little spot hidden away in a side street just opposite the train station, Nonno’s is the place to go if you fancy a relaxed cafe style meal in a pretty setting. They always have at least one vegan sandwich and there are plenty of cakes and pastries on offer. Plant milks are no extra charge and there’s both indoor and outdoor seating.

Harvest Vegetarian - Wrexham

An all-vegan Chinese takeaway sounds like the stuff that dreams are made of but this is no wishful thinking; Harvest Vegetarian actually exists. The food is exceptional, there are tons of vegan versions of your old Chinese takeaway favourites - such as Special Fried Rice and Chicken Balls - and it’s service with a smile from the lovely family who own it.

Ffarm Hall - Abergele

A new addition to the North Wales vegan scene, Ffarm Hall is an all-vegan hotel and restaurant that is owned by the same company that owns Beck Hall, another famously all-vegan hotel in Yorkshire. They are incredibly dog friendly and the menu is extensive, with everything from thali to bratwurst and even Afternoon Tea, too.

If you think it’s missing your obvious choice for a superb vegan dish, get in touch to spread the word of your favourite spot.
